NAYCOM kicks-off YEEP Project for 2400 Youths

 


An inception workshop to kick-off a $ 2.4 million project on Youth Entrepreneurship and EmploymentYEEP by the National Youth Commission was recently held at the Commission’s office in Freetown.
Over 2000 young people are expected to benefit from the three-year project which will focus mainly on skills development for employment; career guidance and job readiness; and a graduate entrepreneurship programme.
NAYCOM’s Commissioner NgoloKatta said the African Development Bank sponsored project would help the Commission achieve its goal of “creating employment opportunities and initiating youth development programmes.”
Mr. Katta said while technical vocational education and training (also known as TVET) had not been popular among young people, the new project would work on rebranding TVET to make it more attractive and meaningful for young people.
He said it was important to “buildthe capacity of young people for the middle-level engagements that contribute to the economy of the country”.
Mr.Katta expressed appreciation to the ADB and assured that the Ministry of Youth and NAYCOM would ensuregovernment buy-in and scaleup.
ADB Country Manager, PeninahKariukisaid youth unemployment figures in Sierra Leone were amongst the highest in the West African sub-region, standing at over 60%. Mrs. Katiuki added that the Bank’s wide strategy aimed at creating 25 million jobs and positively impact 50 million youth over decade.
The project waslaunched by the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mohamed Orman Bangura,who urged young people to see themselves as partners in development.
He said his ministry would engage key stakeholders on access to finance for young people as this continued to be a serious obstacle for young entrepreneurs.
